There are four major pieces of technology needed to make a smart client architecture work:

* A forms package to create the intelligent client software.
* Data transport technology to communicate data between the smart client and the central server, either on the local network or across the Internet.
* A means to deploy smart client software to the client machines, in many cases across the Internet.
* Security technology to protect the system from malicious access.
